I have been playing around with my WHS and mymovies, everything is working great, I stick a DVD in and eventually it gets turned into a MP4. Takes a ton of labor out for me. Only issue with this it is only 2 channel audio which is all an XBOX360 will receive from a MP4.

However if I could rip and convert them to WMV I can have my 5.1 audio but the process wont be automatic like it is now.

Is anyone doing this now manually? if so what are you using to do it and could I at least batch it? Disk Space isn't an issue I have 48TB.

FYI I love mymovies and everything it brings and will continue with just the 2 channel if I have to and have my receiver split it for me which it almost can. The sound isn't that far off.

Big reason why I use an XBOX is I only want one device for games, and streaming movies (Zune, Netflix). Plus I could watch live TV everywhere in my house from my media center PC if I wanted. I have and Xbox in every TV room. I actually use Zune a ton instead of running to redbox or ordering from netflix. FYI Zune video/audio quality is awesome.

Looking for an automated process for WMV, for better XBOX playback.

Unless I am missing something with what mymovies and handbrake can do now.

DVDFab supports command line and might be pretty easy to integrate and gives a greater number of options for formats than Handbrake.

I doubt this is anything we are going to be working on anytime soon.

There are things on our schedule that have higher priority, and this situation should really be solved by Xbox 360 and it's abilities to play 5.1 audio.

Is trans-coding not an option for you? I have been messing around with trying to get uncompressed DVD rips to play on my 360 all day today. I tried ISO first by just using Mikinho's mounter. I got it working on my PC once then the mounting started to just not work. And it never did on the 360. So finally I tried finding a solution to just play straight from a Video_TS. That is what brought me to My Movies. It will trans-code and you will retain the 5.1 audio. That has worked good so far. I have only tried playing Clash of the Titans and The Dark Knight so far. There was only a split second of stutter toward the beginning of playback for both then smooth the rest of the way. This is over wireless too, though I felt the need to upgrade to a N router.

Maybe my ears are deceiving me or Microsoft updated something but my Xbox is playing 5.1. I am currently transcoding with Handbrake. I use the Apple TV2 option. It outputs the sound as both AAC Dolby Digital 5.1 and as AC3 5.1. I believe it does this as two different tracks. I've tried to find new information but everything is from before the latest Dashboard update.
I did find one forum topic with a little information. http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/30/t/156399.aspx along with a media update http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Optional-Media-Update/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802fffe07df
I hope I'm not hearing thing wrong I've already converted 59 movies as M4V (MP4) and would hate to have to re-rip and encode as WMV. Anyone know if there's a program that will inspect the video and tell me what is actually playing?

If you just want to see if there are more than one audio track you should be able to do this with virtually any media player you certainly can with vlc and mpc, you could also use haali splitter to select an audio track from the desktop icon and if you want to see specific details of the audio track being played you could use ffdshow and hover over the ffdshow audio icon. see screenshots below.

It seems I'm doing this;
Quote:
encode to Dolby Pro Logic II - analog matrix encodes 5 channels into the two stereo channels. Just about every surround sound receiver can decode this, but you don't get the most optimal surround sound.

So in HandBrake I've set it to 1) AAC (faac) (Mixdown) Dolby Pro Logic II & 2) AC3 Passthru. The finished file only seems to have one of them. When I run properties on the file in Windows shows as 2ch. When I play in VLC I have no options to change any sound. Of course my PC doesn't have 5.1 so probably doesn't decode the Dolby Pro Logic II.

It was mentioned I can trans-code in My Movies. Will it only work with the Video_TS files or will it transcode a mkv. I tried playing an MKV before I had My Movies and it wasn't recognized. While I could just rip everything into the Video_TS, I would much rather have a 1-2Gb file over a 4-6Gb file. And when I start doing HDDvd and Bluray I'd hate to have a 10Gb-40Gb file.

And speaking of Bluray that leads me to an Mp4 file I have that is Bluray quality that has the 6 channel audio and plays fine on my Xbox. I'm at a loss.

Don't quite know what you mean by this, would be amazed if your PC can't output 5.1 even if it has no coax or optical digital out you can usually set up the pink, green and blue jacks to output 5.1, really doesn't matter anyway regardless of what your PC can output it doesn't stop it from being able to deal with 5.1 audio in respect to encoding/decoding etc.

Have had very limited use with handbrake and sure what your trying to do will be possible using that program but might I suggest you have a go with DVDFab, for me I find it a very easy interface to work out.

What I meant by the 5.1 was can WMC translate the 2-channel to Dolby Pro Logic II or not. I currently only have a 2.1 speaker setup on my PC so really can't test.

I've only been using Handbrake because I had heard great things about it. Last night I tried transcoding an ISO as 3 different M4V files with Handbrake. I used AAC (ffmpeg) w/ (Mixdown) Dolby Digital, AAC (faac) w/ Dolby Digital, and to humor myself AC3 Passthru again. The AC3 Passthru doesn't seem to be recognized by Windows at all when I view the folder I dont' get the sample video image. The properties on both of the AAC show 2-Channel again. Their are 2 More options on AAC that I can try tonight AAC mixed as 6-channel discrete and AAC with No Mixdown. Considering the trouble I'm having, I may have to try DVDFab and just create WMV files.

I don't use wmc for playback but certainly dolby pro logic II is designed to give you a similar 5.1 sound as dolby digital from a 2 channel source, but I would suggest that if the source is 6 channel then I would keep it as thus rather than downmixing to stereo and relying on pro logic II to upmix it back to something like it was before.

All I can say is DVDFab works well for me I rip Blu-Rays to .mkv and keep the audio the same format as original. I don't think you can rip to .m4v with DVDFab but should work okay if you rip to .mp4 and just change the file extension to .m4v if this format is required.

Actually I'm thinking the .m4v might be some of the issue. From reading it is a Apple format for their DRM and might be causing the issues with windows not seeing an AC3 file. I have the AC3Filter codec so I should be able to see them. I've even read that the MKV with AC3 should work on the Xbox as long as it fits some criteria.

What to Expect:
- Windows 7 Media Center streaming to Xbox 360.
- MKV H264 1080 Support (Supporting up to Level 4.1 with 5 Reference Frames).
- 6 Channel AC3 Support (DTS Converted).

Limitations:
- The Xbox is limited to MKV/H264 with up to 15 Reference Frames and AVC Level 4.1
- These are discussed later in the guide.

Required Files:
- DivX Plus HD for Windows 7: http://www.divx.com/en/windows-7
- AC3 Filter: http://ac3filter.net...jects/ac3filter

I'll give it one more go with Handbrake with the options for MP4 instead of M4V, and try a MVK with the settings from the other forum. I found a profile from a guy on the DVDFab site that he uses for Xbox streaming. Once I get a good quality 5.1 setup working, I'll have to post something here so everyone can have a guide and not have the "fun" I'm having Tongue out

Forgot I never posted a follow up for anyone looking to have their movies stream to an Xbox via Extender. This is my current process.

1) Rip the DVD to my HDD using CloneDVD2 (I only rip the Surround Track & Main movie, you can rip Subtitles if needed)
2) Use DVDFab's DVD Ripper to create a WMV.
a) I chose the Xbox settings
b) Choose your Video_TS (Folder Icon) or ISO (DVD Icon)
c) I switch to WMV 10 (allows for 5.1 Audio)
d) Adjust the slider for quality/size until the bit/pixel gets to .200 (you can see bit/pixel in the right side with the resolution ex; 720x450 etc)
- You can set it as high as .400 for fast action/animation but it will give larger sized files (.200 apx 700MB-1GB, .400 apx 1GB-4GB)
e) Make sure to edit the settings to 5.1 Surround (note the Xbox can not use DTS or HDAudio, only AC3 so it will be Mixed-down)
f) If you have subtitles check the Forced Subtitles option (Not usually needed for DVD because they are printed on the source).
- You would normally only have the subtitles when they are required due to language tracks (ex; Chinese Audio, English Subtitles)
g) Save as default
3) Enjoy your DVD quality video w/ 5.1 Audio on your Xbox

Isn't WMV still slow when fast forwarding or rewinding? I would think you would be better off with either WTV or DVR-MS. I am fairly certain that the WTV container can handle HD video and AC3 surround audio. It would likely give you a better end user experience when you need to FF/RW too.

I would not say its slow, seems to FF and RW at normal speed to me. I do however get a few milliseconds of digital distortion. This isn't a factor when I watch movies when I watch something I normally don't do either. In terms of other containers, there are ways to get the 5.1 to work but it seems to require rips and encoding of the video and audio, and then muxing them or using something like MakeMKV to combine. For instance I downloaded multiple formats to test with; AVI, MP4, MKV to see if they would play and some will play 5.1 some don't. Usually it is based on the format each was ripped as then combined. I was unable to get Handbrake to make a MP4 or MKV that had the 5.1 that was playable in the Xbox. Since Microsoft of course recommends using WMV for 5.1, I used DVDFab to make them and they worked, therefore I stopped researching how to create them in any other format.
