I currently use DVD Profiler in Windows 7. I'm interested in migrating my DVD Profiler to My Movies for a couple of reasons:
1. I'm getting a Dune HD Smart D1 media player for playing movies in a NAS. I like at My Movies can generate metadata for Dune.
2. I'm a Mac user, and I like that My Movies is available for the Mac. That will simplify my workflow.
Questions:
1. What are the differences between "My Movies for Mac OS X" and Windows "Collection Management" software? I read in another thread that "My Movies for Mac OS X" cannot export metadata for Dune? Are there other things that the Windows "Collection Management" can do that can't be done on the Mac?
2. If I have to use Windows "Collection Management", then can I also use "My Movies for Mac OS X"? I think that my movie collection will be stored both locally and in My Movies' "cloud" server, so that all clients (whether in Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc.) can all synch with the "cloud"?
Just wondering if I should get started with the Windows version first.
thanks.

Well, first of all, I have not yet found a way to search for titles in My Movies for Mac OS X in the same way you can with Collection Management. It seems to me you´ll have to edit the data manually(?). Although I might have overlooked something, a button or icon somewhere. I find this lack of feature strange because the searchable online user contributed database is what makes MM such a great platform.
If the My Movies for Mac OS X don´t edit the xml-files, fan art etc in the shared network folder, I find the My Movies for Mac OS X almost useless. I use Collection Management mainly to correct and update the covers, movie synopsis and so on to keep the movie data on my network share updated.
Hope someone from Binnerup could comment on this.

randyman: There are several differences between the Windows and the Mac software at this point.
The Mac software is a collection software only, it does not yet store meta-data for Dune or anything else. Comparing it to DVD Profiler, this does not make a difference to you however, as DVD Profiler does not do this either. My Movies for Mac will not help you with your Dune.
The Mac software stores everything in the cloud - the Windows software can optionally sync with the cloud, but currently does not store your paths there, so when operating with NAS devices, it is not ideal to use over cloud.
tols1: As mentioned above, My Movies for Mac does not at this point store meta-data files in any way.
You can click on the add titles icon, and search our database from there to add titles - what you do not have is the IMDB import button that Windows has - this likely will also be removed from Windows in the future.

Thank you for your reply.
Regarding your last statement (IMDB import), it seems to me that functionality wise, the Mymovies-platform is going the wrong way. At least for people like myself, who store movies on a local server/NAS.

There are very good reasons why IMDB import option is missing on Mac and why it may be removed on PC. Look at it this way though: with the proper back end improvements there is nothing that function does that we cannot do internally.

To be honest, I think you are using the application wrong - instead of using the 625.000 pre-created profiles for content, you appear to be adding titles and using the IMDB import button for something it is not intended for. This button is intended to be used only when creating a new profile - where there already are the 625.000 profiles. You are right, that if you have items that have not been released on DVD or Blu-ray, then the IMDB import button can be used to quicker add a title manually, but I can't see why you would have such titles.

Hi there,
I'm interested in this thread because I recently switched to Mac and wanted to re-use My Movies (discovered on windows a few years ago).
Is there any chance the Mac OS X version can create meta-data files for ours digital players in future releases ?
Thanks for your answer.

Meta-data storage is planned on Mac OS X as well, yes.

Ok. This means, that actors have to be entered one by one like in case of crew, where mostly the director and writer is automatically imported from imdb? In case of crew I try to enter persons for all given 8 functions. In case of actors this would mean that only a few actors would be entered, what would be a loss compared to today.

The reason I mention it might be removed is that we are not removing it unless we have an alternative.
We are working on extending our meta-data back end to have generic movie profiles - the idea is then that cast in the future can be either imported or referenced to the generic movie profile.
That way, it is only one profile per movie, and not one for each DVD release in multiple countries.

Ok, that really sounds great and it would be an advantage to add different versions of the same film and to keep cast and crew up to date on all media. Fine.
