Just some advice from other MCE 2005 / Vista MC User's....

I have a complex setup involving a Xbox 360 Elite in the Bedroom and a Playstation 3 and Sony VAIO XL series MS Media Centre 2005 in the lounge as well as a Windows home Server in the Office, I'd like to be able to view my DVD collection on my Xbxo 360 Elite which use's Extender connection to the VAIO Media Centre 2005 , i'm currently using MyMovies ( http://www.mymovies.dk ) on the WHS which copys DVD's directly on the WHS as exact copy's ( VOB files and Folders with Folder.jpg etc ) as well as finds movie information with cover art work automatically for both DVD copying and downloaded movies as long as the folders name has the same match as the movie Title

I can't play back on the Xbox 360 Elite via Extender on the Media Centre 2005, either get a Window Saying "VIDEO NOT COMPATIBLE" The title you are trying to play in not supported on a Media Centre extender. ora Blue screen saying "Cannot Play Video" The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. either the correct codec (a file that compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.

I've Installed KLite Mega Codec Pack latest Version as well as VLC Player on the Media Centre and Transcode360

1. VOB vs. ISO which is best for Media Centre and Xbox 360 Extender?
2. Will a Vista Upgrade on the Media Centre 2005 Edition make things better, in other words is Vista Better for media streaming and DVD Library, cause some website's have solutions on DVD Library but they stress that only Works for Vista MCE due to CommandLink etc ?
3. Sorry for all the Questions, I'm trying to prepare for setting all up properly when my new WHS arrives ( HP MediaSmart) So as far as I know so far is on the WHS install the following : MyMovies for WHS v1.01 with AnyDVD ( However someone said That VCD if installed is picked up by MyMovies if Installed instead of AnyDVD ) as well as TVersity 1.0 RC4 on the WHS ( installed with additional Codecs as explained and described by PS3forums.com ), try and upgrade the memory on the HP MediaSmart to 2Gb 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 ; Media Centre 2005 Edition either upgrade it to Vista Ultimate or try get Media Centre 2005 to work with Transcode360 + MyMovies Client , so am i missing something so far etc....

The Xbox 360 extender does not play the VIDEO_TS file structure - we will likely at some point release a version that can copy to one MPEG file (or DVR-MS file) in one go.

1. Neither, it does not play any of those.
2. No, Vista has the same limitation on extenders. Vista is better in the situation where you would like My Movies for WHS to supply meta-data to the DVD library, but it does not change anything regarding playback.
3. You can install all of these things, but it does not change the fact that extenders does not play the VIDEO_TS file structure that My Movies for WHS copies nor, nor the ISO files.

Well I don't see why My Movies can't play my vob files on the Xbox 360.

If I go to the "Video Library" under "Pictures + Videos" I can pick the vob file and play it there with no problems. I have tried many different ways to do this. I have one movie split into 1gb vob files with no subtitles and 1 audio stream, plays fine. The same movie with the vob files merged together into a 4gb vob with 1 audio stream also plays fine. But if I go through my movies with the same file set up I get the error "The Title You Are Trying to Play is not supported by a Media Center Extender."

It doesn't make much sense to have the program when I can do it without it. I like the catalog of My Movies but if I can play the movies straight from vob without having to convert, install a plug in, or do any registry modification whats the point of this program? I love the program and I don't see why people say the xbox cannot play vob files when mine does and I have done none of the stuff written in these forums accept backup a DVD into the "Video_TS" file format. If there is a way to get the My Movies plug in to actually play the vob file I would like to know.

I have seen the DVD Library Hack and thought that would be cool, but I would then have to make the hard-links to mpeg files and that seems a long road compared to just picking where the file sits.

I am by NO means an expert at any of this, and I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but I think I agree with you.

I just copied a .vob file from a direct rip off a DVD with no file splitting (IFO Mode in DVD Decrypter - Main Movie: 2.8 GB) and then transferred that to a folder in my Video share on my WHS and subsequently changed the extension to .mpg.

This video was detected by My Movies and showed up in my movie list in WMC on my Xbox and it even played the video perfectly. I did not get any audio, but I think this is because I had only decrypted one of the audio streams (... I'm going to experiment with this to see if I can get audio to work).

[Edit: When ripping all streams, the audio works; but it seems to just play the first stream - not so useful for me on my test DVD which is a Japanese Anime flick, LOL! But... the exciting thing is that it IS playing a Dobly Digital 5.1 audio stream]

Futhermore, I was even able to "Change Data" and assign this movie the appropriate title with all the usual metadata goodness.

Of note, this file did not play in the regular Xbox media player, but this makes sense because it is documented that this does not play MPEG-2 files (whereas WMC in Xbox does).

This is something interesting that will likely keep me up tonight...

[Edit: when transferring this vob (renamed mpg) file to the folder that contains the ISO for this movie, it plays as well]

OK, so I've repeated this for 6 different DVD's now and this works flawlessly, except the only problem is that it will only play the first audio stream (which isn't a problem if it happens to be your prefferred language).

Otherwise, no chapter control or subtitle support either, but this is to be expected.

Ironically, I spent 12 hours today working out a method to convert a VOB to a high quality WMV for this purpose. But, just in 15 minutes, I can now have the original quality video/audio source by this method. Awesome...

Why are you changing the name to .mpeg, the WMC in Xbox will play the vob without doing that? I just rip the movie straight from DVD into Video_TS folder and put it in a watched video folder (not using MY Movies). Like I said before you can just go to "Pictures + Videos" and play the vob from there, no name changing and no converting. The regular xbox media player sucks it wont play half my movies anyway.

I'm really only doing that so that WMP on my PC will also play the file (testing out before taking the 5 minutes to transfer the file to my server. MPG will open in WMP for me, but VOB and MPEG won't - kinda picky.

But also, I am using My Movies in WMC in Xbox; not the Video Library. For me, I am getting the files to play fine this way; which I think is different than what you are experiencing, but I don't know why.

[EDIT] Ahhh.... but when I change the extension back to .vob - then I get the following message in WMC on the Xbox, "VIDEO NOT COMPATIBLE The title you are trying to play is not supported on a Media Center extender" I then logged out of WMC, changed the extension back to MPG and was able to play the video again via My Movies as before.

I think that the same weirdness that let's WMP in Vista play an MPEG-2 file named with a .MPG extension (but not with a .VOB extension) is at play here. One idea, I know that I have MPEG-2 codecs on my notebook PC which I had set up WMC on my Xbox; but I don't know about the WHS where all the data is which the Xbox is actually accessing. I have no idea if that plays a role.

Interesting info, which additional software do you all use, ie AnyDVD vs Decrypter and which versions?

I recieved my new proper WHS ( HP MediaSmart 1TB ) will be adding Additional Hard Drives tonight ( 2 x 500GB for now ) So far installed My Movies but not added my account just yet waiting to see what other users use as additional software like VCD etc..

My Media Centre has Trancode360 , VLC Player and Klite Mega Codec Player ( what programs do you guys use on your media centre's and which version as well as which OS MCE 2005 vs Vista )

I am posting instructions (as well as my individual setup) of what I am doing here.

This COMPLETELY blows away the other Idea I had, which was to convert DVD's to WMV; which I found entails about 10 hours of work per DVD (although I learned a ton by figuring out how to do this).

Yes, I am aware of some of these issues -I have been reading about this the past few days. And, some of these issues are apparent with my experience described above (ie only the 0x80 audio stream being available). But, so far this has worked wonderfully for me, but admittedly, I have not yet had the time to watch more than the first 10 or 15 min of any these movies, so I cannot fully comment on irregularities related to timestamps that you list.

If work is slow today, I'm going to try to figure out a way to demux the audio and video and remux just the audio stream that I want; but I am skeptical this will work out well.

I currently use DVD Shrink 3.2 or DVDDecryter 3.5.4.0 for backing up the vob files. I do not change vob to mpeg or any other conversion. I currently am not using My Movies. Tried it didn't do what I wanted it to do so I stopped using it.

I want to use the plug in but it doesn't play the files without renaming or converting.

I would use My Movies if I could just change the name to mpeg, but the movies hang or I get an error about 30 min into a movie.

The DVD Library hack seems to work but is a lot of trouble just to watch a movie.

A merged VOB is not a proper MPEG - it's as simple as that...

We are not creating features based on something that only works in 95% of the times.

Well I don't even want to change the name. The program wants me to do converting of a file format that is supported in WMC.

A .VOB file is not a valid video file without a VIDEO_TS stucture.

Even with the Video_TS File structure the movies will not play in an extender that supports the playing of the VOB using MY Movies. My point is that my extender, the Xbox 360, will play VOB file no matter what structure they are in through the "Pictures + Video" and My Movies wont play them at all. When I back up my DVDs I back them up to Video_TS structure with IFO's and BUPs. My Movies program is great, don't get me wrong, but I can't get my dvd backups to play though it on my extender.

You do not get what I am writing here:

1. Extenders does not support VIDEO_TS file structures. Full file structures as a 1:1 copy of a DVD. It is not a My Movies limitation, but an extender limitation.

2. You may be able to play a single VOB file from My Videos section on the extender, as it is a "near" MPEG-2 file, which the extender can play, however on a DVD, there is not one single VOB, but typically four to five for the main movie, so playing a single unmanipulated file will not help you.

3. Some projects claim that merging the above mentioned four to five VOBs to a single VOB either directly or via. shortcuts makes a near MPEG-2 filer, but an invalid MPEG-2 file. This will work in most, but not all situations, as it may give crashes ect. on the extenders when moving over player breaks, when handling muliple audio tracks that are stored in the file, ect.

4. If the merged VOB should be a valid MPEG-2 file, it must be re-muxed, and a default audio track must be marked in the file. If we add a process for My Movies to copy to such file type, this will likely be the method, perhaps stuffed in a DVR-MS container (which also contains MPEG-2 data).

So, you are absolutely right that My Movies does not allow you to play your DVD backups on the extenders, because of limitations on the extenders not supporting VIDEO_TS file structures.

That you are able to play a VOB file does not help you, becuase while it works on some DVD's, it won't be a stable solution because a VOB file is only valid with a VIDEO_TS file structure. And, as mentioned before, we will not implement anything that can be considered only a partly working solution.

Regards,

Brian

Ok I see what your getting at. I have not had a problem yet with a merged vob so its just luck.

Yes, mainly.

Believe me, we will be doing something here, but we cannot rely on luck ;-)
