FYI,
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-20126357-75/windows-media-center-pops-up-in-windows-8/

It will be in Windows 8 they removed it from the Developer Preview.

TheVerge wrote:
We are hearing that Media Center will still be included in Windows 8, but that it will remain relatively untouched from the Windows 7 version. Unlike Windows 7, it will be separated into an edition (or editions) aimed at enthusiasts. Microsoft's TV strategy has shifted towards Xbox so the existing Media Center product will be removed from most editions of Windows 8. The separation means Microsoft can eliminate licensing fees that the company and OEMs have to pay for certain technologies used in Media Center, pushing the core cost of Windows down. Microsoft's Windows chief, Steven Sinofsky, hinted at this strategy in a September 2011 blog post, explaining that Media Center is part of "premium" SKUs for Windows.

Update: Microsoft reached out to us to confirm Media Center will remain in the final version of Windows 8, but could not confirm if a version will be included in the Consumer Preview. The software maker tweeted an image today (see above) confirming that Media Center will be similar to the Windows 7 version. We have updated our headline to reflect this.

Your report from the link is well out of date. (October 2011)

Micro$oft have since announced that Windows 8 will not ship with Windows Media Center at all.

Yes it will be available but only to users of Windows 8 Professional and even then as a purchasable add-on, going on their belief that user no longer use Windows Media Center because the end user's are already going to other providers for their HTPC software.

My quote was from Feb 2012, the original article yes my have been older. In the quote it lists there will be multiple versions (similar to when Media Center first came out you have Home, Professional, and Media Center editions of XP). The first article was just to say the Windows was putting it in Windows 8 for testing.

But that is the point Micro$oft putting it in for TESTING, doesn't say for releasing, which is a different thing altogether.

Read the quote again it will remain in the Final Version (what is released for sale), they just are not sure if it will be in the Consumer Preview (the free download before release) or as mentioned in your post as an add-on. They seem to really be going after the Marketplace idea so I'd go with a separate download.

Until they have a better way to bring your movies to the Xbox and other networked devices, I don't see them eliminating it completely. Since Microsoft wants the Xbox to become a Media/Home Theater Device. The Xbox 720 may have something better, who knows it may have a build in Media Hub that will access shared drives and allow custom art. Currently the Xbox w/o the MC Extender only allows you to browse file names, no custom UI. Also some consumers still use the Media Center software for the HTPC along with addon's like My Movies, you need a variety even if everyone doesn't use it somebody will. Not including it in the Windows release makes sense because if others can charge for a Media Center program why can't Microsoft and just charge less for the Versions w/o it.

It is quite simple.

Windows Media Center is an add-on purchase to the Pro version of Windows 8.

It will be unavailable in any other Windows 8 versions, and it will not be included with the Pro version, but can be purchased separately.

In the current release preview, it takes another license key to install it.

This means that Windows Media Center is still available, but not as easy as it was before.

I have a Windows Phone and love it. It will be fun to see it on a PC environment. I'm hoping they add some additional feature for WMC instead of just leaving as it like the current builds. I'm also curious about their Xbox plans considering their plans for multi-platform linking. Maybe they will look into their new Smart Glass as an option, or maybe they will as an actual Media Center app to the Xbox that will stream instead of using the File explorer.

So what is the general consensus about upgrading to Windows 8? With the recent announcement of a $39.99 upgrade price (http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2012/07/02/upgrade-to-windows-8-pro-for-39-99.aspx) I wonder if I should be looking to upgrade? This is the pro version, so Media Center can be added.

"if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets. And if you want, you can add Windows Media Center for free through the “add features” option within Windows 8 Pro after your upgrade."

Is their any reason why My movies would drop support for Windows 7, like they did with Vista? If they do then an upgrade would be smart while the price is cheap. If Windows 7 is going to be supported for a really long time I might wait for Window 9.

I dont' see any reason to drop support of 7. Vista was rushed system and had issue all by itself. Trying to figure out if your program is bugged or if Vista is causing the issue is why most developers don't support it. If you notice most developer still support XP but not Vista. I was debating the Windows 8 upgrade, not because of the design but because I didn't want to fork out $200 for Pro. I love the Metro style because I have a Windows Phone and Xbox.

As I understand it My Movies dropped support for Vista because Windows 7 had a feature that they wanted to use, and it was not in Vista. So I am wondering if their is going to be a feature in Win 8 that My Movies wants to use and will drop Win 7 for it?

I also have an Xbox, but I am not a fan of the Metro UI. I suppose it may be more user friendly on an HTPC, but on my HTPC I have it automatically load WMC, so I don't ever see the desktop.

Yeah I'm used to it because of my phone. The metro design in Windows 8 IMO is just a replacement for the start menu. I don't have a HTPC setup since I learned of the Media Center Extender with the Xbox, so I would be using Win 8 for my actual PC.

Unless Microsoft are going to start allowing Blu-ray support directly in the Xbox, starting with the 360, I can't see them getting very far in hoping the by removing WMC from Windows in a vain attempt to promote the xbox as a media center will work.

And I doubt if everybody will rush and replace their 360 with a 720 (whenever it is released) either. I certainly won't.

Last I read the 720 will probably not have Blu-ray support either. What I'm hoping is with all the 3rd party apps coming to the Xbox they start to allow other developers to create a media center similar to XBMC that can network to your home PC. With Windows 8 also removing DVD support w/o a 3rd party software as well, I can see a lot of changes on the Media front coming.

I'm liking the look of Windows 8. MyMovies guys, How about making a great MyMovies Windows 8 (and windows phone 8) Movie/TV app that can be used like you plugin does now to get the nice metadata. This would be a logical move forward seeing that MS are trying to move away from the use of Media Centre..
The Video app currently is not that well designed for a large movie collection (and worse for TV collections)

I tried the Windows 8 consumer preview for a few months. It was interesting concept but really screwed with local network connections. They want you to sign in with a Microsoft user ID but then it will not connect automatically with local network connections using a normal user name / password scenario. Then if you get rid of the MS user ID there are certain functions of Windows 8 that do not work properly. I finally got tired of it and went back to windows 7. I guess it would probably work fine if all my computers were Windows 8 but I am not going to upgrade all of them just to satisfy Microsoft's attempt at getting everyone to sign up for a MS ID.

Windows 7 is rock solid and straight forward and I think it will be awhile before Windows 8 is such.

Carl.
