Hi all,

Attached is a new version for WHS - it requires a not yet release 2.48 PR4 as a client, so users using the client please wait with installing.

I am adding it here to get the first results in before putting it on the general download page.

This version comes with a Music Disc Copier!

Regards,

Brian

Brian

Will this work with the modified client you sent me last week, or do I need to wait as well?

A server reboot or starting the service under Computer Management is necessary or else when you click on Start in the Console, it will not start.

Thanks for the ability to rip cd's.Tongue out

Is that the "General" service?

If so, please post a log - it sounds like it had an error and closed.

The installer should auto-start that service.

Brian,

Just downloaded the pre-release 4 version from the downloads page, but after installing it says that it is the pre-release 3 version. Is there some mistake involved? :)

Grtz,

Nic

When I click properties on a ripped cd in the My Music Disc Copier nothing happens, what is normally supposed to appear there?

Grtz,

Nic

Sorry, that is the the problem with forgetting to change the info file.

It's re-uploading now - your version is identical though.

Brian

I have installed the latest WHS and client packages as of 12.30pm Saturday. When I rip a CD on the WHS box is ripped complete but then created a yellow WHS health notice. When I looked at the notification it said 'The disc was copied successfully'.

Is this a slight 'software improvement opportunity'? (Programmer's never have bugs. Just chances to improve things!!!!)

Simon: This is a stupid Microsoft thing, where we can send information, warning or error messages - but information messages are NEVER displayed anywhere - so, for you to see it, it has to be a warning.

Okay I understand that, but a couple of things come to mind.
1. At what point do you clear this? I ripped a CD yesterday lunchtime and the warning was still there when I woke up this morning.
2. Have you looked at the WHS Alert add-on that GaMeR, over on WGS has developed. He seems to have a way to use the Health Notice to pass on messages.

1) You can't - the console decides itself when it thinks you have read it. I have written the WHS team about this, and hope they improve the options in a future version.

2) I have not, can you provide a link? I expect that he is using the same WHS info class as I am.

Here is the link

Edit: One minor correction. This add-in is actually written by Brent. Better not upset a MS WHS MVP!
Here is a link to the thread about this.

It appears that Brent might have a way of removing the health warning.

Yeah... He mentions a RemoveNotification function from the SDK... That would be a nice addition.

You are right - there is a remove option.

I will see if it's possible to do something about that. Based on how it operates now it's not easy though.

Hi Brian,

Hope this in the right thread.

I have installed 1.0.0.7 along with PR4 and notice a few issues:

Looking at titles in Collection Management I notice that Directors appear twice in the Crew Members area. It may be that this also occurred previously but I hadn't noticed but if so it is certainly a recent problem. Also editing cast and crew is remarkably slow - the filter takes forever to produce a list of matches.

Also I notice that the new Music Copier facility only allows MP3 and WAV whereas I usually use high quality WMA - any reason that cannot be available?

Lastly the scheduled backup facility seems to have disappeared entirely rather than being not yet available. Is that going to return with a later version? With the normal MM server with command line options I could use the Windows scheduler to automate backups albeit I had to write a fancy batch file to provide discetely named backup files - using the WHS version I can't apparently do that and the database does need to be backed up regularly to shared storage so that it is secured along with the rest of the data.

In essence though I do think that the WHS add-in makes a lot of sense and is easier to use than the traditonal server.

Regards

Alan

This is general issues on 2.48 PR - please use the technical support threads for these.

MP3 was first priority, WAV is given when encoding to MP3 - WMA will be added for next release.

Yes, that is because I am unsure if it will make it to the final version.

OK Brian - thanks for prompt reply. Really that means that the backup issue is my only real concern. As you know the data on WHS can be duplicated and backed up to external storage as long as it is held within the shared area rather than system. For the MM database to be secured in this way and therefore not lost if a system restore is necessary either there needs to be a means of backing up the database to a share or the database itself needs to be held on a share rather than on the system drive (or both). I certainly feel it would be a step backwards if the WHS add-in poses more difficulties in this respect than the standard server version. Having to run manual backups via the Console is clunky at best and of course is bound to be overlooked immediately before a system crash!! I know that the Server backup facility that became available with the WHS Power Pack also has to be run manually and is an issue raised by users but at least there are alternative utilities that can be scheduled.

Regards,

Alan
