Cheers Andy! I was looking at it for so long in the end I couldn't see the wood for trees, but that makes it very clear for me! Thanks.

Hi there,

so i found the answer to my originally question i ask another one.

I scanned a DVD Boxset (The Tarantino Collection - 743217533397). On MM 5 or the android app i can´t see the discs, that belongs to this Box. So i scanned every movie inside that box and added them to the Boxset. Know i can see the "+" under the Box Collection and can look at all the information fron the single discs.

But when i want to submit the Change it says i can´t submit because my Box is different from the Box on the Server and it cointains ....

But Server Box contains the same Movies that i added to the Box. And when the Server already has the information why can´t i see the singel Discs connected to it?

Hope you can follow.

greetings

You didn't actually add the same items, by scanning the barcodes of what I assume are the boxes of the individual movies that came in the box set what you have added to your collection are the disc profiles that correspond to the barcoded individually sold items. These are separate to the actual child items that exist for a fully contributed box set, even where these are also sold separately.

My suggestion would be that you delete all of these from your collection and then add the box set parent item manually using the barcode, I am not sure that when scanning the full box set gets added. That or remove the barcoded standalone items and use the import box set option which should pull the actual child items. All box set child items use the 12 zero code, if you have added items with barcodes those are actually the standalone profiles.

One rule that I really wish would be changed is the rule about child title cover images in single case box sets.

I think like most users, I find it really annoying to see the box set cover duplicated over multiple titles in my collection. Aside from not looking good in the display, It also means that the cover image often doesn't match the film title.

This is especially galling since a lot of single case box sets actually DO display the cover image for the individual movies in the packaging!

This can be in the form of small images of the individual title images on the back (or front) of the box, e.g. The Final Destination Quadrilogy UK Blu-Ray box set, or The Naked Gun Trilogy UK DVD Box Set. Or sometimes unique cover art for each movie on the internal fold out disc holders, Booklet or art cards, e.g. The Kurosawa Samurai Collection UK DVD box set or the new Bong Joon Ho UK Blu-Ray box set. In all these cases there is no ambiguity about the cover images and they all have a specific cover image for each specific film. Also, in all these cases, the cover art conforms to the dimensions of a Blu-Ray or DVD cover. In the majority of cases, the cover image is the same as the individually sold version that you'd find if you looked that title up by its disc ID.

I don't see why these cover images can't be used on the Child titles, as they are covers specified by the box set itself. Obviously there would be no back cover, so this could either be left blank, or use the box set back cover as is currently done (I would favour the latter).

From a moderation point of view it shouldn't cause any extra work as the individual cover images would either appear on the front or back of the existing box set art, so can easily be checked that they match. Or where the cover art appears in booklets, fold out digipacks or cards etc. then additional supporting photos would need to be supplied by the submitting user, just like we do currently for any other issue.

I propose that where individual covers are displayed within the box set packaging, that they should be used on the Child titles. Is there some way of officially putting this Idea forward? As I'm sure that the majority of users would prefer this.

Speaking as both a mod and a user who has numerous locally customised box set child covers precisely due to not wanting the same cover I have to say I doubt there will be any change on this from the standpoint of the public web service.

Part of the problem is you are highlighting just a handful of examples out of the VAST number of box sets that exist in the world where this might work and ignoring the much greater number where it won't.

Some box sets may have art somewhere in the packaging that's the right size or there about but far more don't. The trouble is once you start this sort of setup we will get a landslide of images pulled, re-sized, re-scaled etc. from all over and not just in the packaging causing all sorts of verification and quality problems.

There is also the significant monkey see, monkey do effect, where once users start seeing cover images that don't match the case they immediately assume oh we can contribute whatever we want now and set about doing just that in vast quantities that then all have to be reverted and corrected etc..

I understand where you are coming from and will say that while it is not something we encourage or recommend because it tends to lead to invalid contributions you can provided you are careful to never contribute it make any local change you wish, this will of course be local only to the device where made and will not sync across devices.

You are welcome to make a feature request but in terms of the contributed covers I am confident the developers would say no to any such change for similar reasons to why we avoid other preferential changes that don't follow the simple rules because everyone never agrees and such changes become a fight.

One possibility that has been suggested and discussed and is likely a far better option and I would encourage it being put forward as a feature request (no promises it ever happens though) is to simply have a choice/tick box option in the personal options to show the selected generic movie poster in place of the front cover as this solves all the problems and without accepting invalid cover contributions for the actual disc items.

Thanks for the response. Locally customising the ‘offending’ covers seems like a good solution. However, I mainly use MyMovies on iPhone and iPad, and I don’t think there’s an option to amend cover art on these platforms without contributing it (Unless I’ve missed something?). I only really use my PC as a means to contribute titles or high res scans etc, as I have a scanner linked up to it. I've also used it to create some personal titles to get around this issue, though obviously these are too limited to really solve the problem.

While having the option to display poster art would be an improvement, it wouldn’t solve the issue from my point of view. Which is that ideally I want the cover images I see on MyMovies to reflect the real ones on my shelf.

I think the best solution is to have an option to add personal/custom covers to existing titles, so they would sync across platforms. Not only would this solve the Box Set Child titles issue, but it would also solve a load of other related issues. e.g. titles that have multiple different covers that use the same barcode, or people who don't want j-cards, stickers and other advertising paraphernalia displayed on their cover art.

Obviously this would have increased hosting/storage implications, so this could be offered as an add-on at an additional cost or for those over a set large quantity of points. It could also be scaled, so charge X amount or require X number of points for every X amount of custom covers etc.

This way you could have strict Core listings available centrally to everyone, but also have the option for individuals to use their own custom covers if they want to.

So I tried to contribute the following changes to the german box set "Die Bud Spencer XXL Jumbo Box" (4013575708864). It was declined for the following reason:

Quote:
it should be a child per movie.

not 4 children for each disk.

please read guidelines and resubmit

I don't know what is meant when it say "not 4 children for each disk" - I didn't do that?

to explain things - this box set (4013575708864) is a collection of other box sets that exist as standalone box sets as well.

These are as follow:
- Die Bud Spencer Gauner-Box (4013575708666) containing 3 movies
- Die Dicke Bud Spencer Box (4013575708765) containing 3 movies
- Die Grosse Bud Spencer Box (4013575708468) - containing 4 movies
- Die Grosse Plattfuss-Box (4013575708468) - containing 4 movies

I tried to follow the guidelines as I understood them, apparently I did not. Yell
Of course I wanna resubmit it but given the fact that these are individual box sets, contained in another big box set, I thought it is right to first add the individual box sets as child titles with a "000000000000" barcode (even when they have their own barcodes) and then add the movies as child titles to these box sets.

So should I really just add all 14 movies into the box set (4013575708864) as child titles and ignore the box sets that contain these movies?

From what you describe the issue would be as best I can guess (as I can't see what you tried to contribute now) is that you created a child item for each of the 4 sub-boxes when it should be a child item for each movie.

So assuming the title is valid and as you describe it would be a parent with 14 child titles one for each movie, note nested sets are not a thing.

sorry for the double post, but in regards to the box set I mentioned above. I contributed it again a few weeks ago and some things have been accepted but the box set (Die Bud Spencer XXL Jumbo Box - bar code 4013575708864) is still in the moderation waiting line? Did I do something wrong again? Sorry to be a pain.
