I was just wondering and hoping that one or some of the admins could go through the complete master list of the production companies and delete all the junk. If it feels like too much work. I volunteer to do it.
There are just FAAR too many instances of multiple entries for the same company. It just makes a total mess of the whole thing. It also makes it so that I'm never sure which of the 100 versions of Disney I should use when filling out info on a profile. It's easy to weed out all the ones that are just spelling error entries, but a lot of them are still just completely redundant.
I mean, I understand that we got here because the users were given far too much freedom in being able to create studios.
Like do we really need:
Warner Warner Bros Warner Bros. Warner Bros Home Video Warner Bros. Home Video Warner Bros Entertainment Warner Bros. Entertainment Warner Bros Entertainment Inc Warner Bros Entertainment Inc. Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Warner Bros. Entertainment Canada Inc. Warner Bros Entertainment Canda Inc. etc.
And the list goes on and on...
Can we just get this all cleaned up? And then perhaps going forward to avoid this, lock the create a studio option, for whenever a new studio actually DOES need to be created. So that when someone creates a new entry it needs to be approved by a mod. As it stands it's just anarchy in that studio section...

I agree with jekyl, it is definitely a pet peeve of mine from the very beginning of using the software. I would volunteer to work on this too, as Disney is also a mess, along with MGM, etc. Most of the major studios it has gotten out of control. I would think the official production company name should come from the actual company registered legal name not what is printed on the DVD cover with the inherent variations possible due to printing and graphic editing of cover art.
Ultimately I have just shrugged it off and ignore the little annoyances with the software and database. As a result of ignoring the little things I am no longer using all the features of the app because they just don't work properly for me. I am finding I use the app less and less at this point. The Collections feature is good, but contribution rules are very rigid (understandably so) and now you can't add artwork. The Lists feature allows some flexibility to make up for the Collections rigidity. But, I have now switched my phone from Android to iOS, so it is not even on my radar anymore, until the next iOS release is out. Not a good sign when a power user/contributor is getting tired of or disinterested in the app...

I think it can be difficult to determine what to replace here. Like "Warner Bros Entertainment Canda Inc.", is not the same as "Warner Bros." Can we try to make some lists of the legal and correct name to list, and make a list of things to change, such as: Warner --> Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. ? I also agree. It's extremely frustrating when you have to scroll through all of these entries that are not needed. I love this app and I understand not everything is perfect but this is not an issues on the blu-ray.com app.
Here is another example: -Kino Lorber -Kino Lorber Corp. -Kino Lorber Inc. -Kino Lorber Incorporated -Kino Lorber Studio Classics -Kino Lorber, Inc.
Is this really necessary...it just makes things a mess and when I wanna create a filter for a studio I have to select all of them or some titles wont appear because someone keeps adding different entries for the same studio. Please clean this up, you need just one entry, either Kino Lorber or Kino Lorber Studio Classic. I don't even want to discuss Fox...cause that's another mess.
Another recommendation is to create a section in the Statistics that tells you the top studios in collection like on the blu-ray.com app.

? Yeah, I mean obviously there are variations of studios and different branches, and those various ones should be included (like Sony Pictures, and Sony Pictures Classics, Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Television) They are different entities and yeah, should be included. But every spelling error, variation, abbreviation, etc should be deleted, and the creation of adding new ones should be locked (to be approved by an admin), to stop any old person who doesn't know what they're doing to just keep adding incorrect ones or duplicates. If you want, I can sit down and help with a master list, but I'd need to see all of what is currently on there.

If the list could be pared down to one of each variation, that would be a start.
So Warner Brothers, per jekyl's first example could be: Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Home Video Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Warner Bros. Entertainment Canada Inc.
A reduction from 13+ varying references, to 4...
Taking note of the "Bros." with the abbreviation and period at the end. This is colloquially how the studio is referred in most documentation. They don't go by "Bros" (no period) or "Brothers", or "Warner" (with no Bros.). and in the English language whenever you have an abbreviation of a word like Incorporated to Inc. there is also a period at the end, not Inc (no period).
There could be some argument as to if a comma is included or not, for example Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. or Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. (with the comma) Which is proper punctuation, but the admins could just select one preferred option when Inc. is involved in a studio name. Thereby eliminating many variations of essentially the same name.

I’ve normalized most of the Criterion Collection and BFI variants I’ve encountered. Many of the other labels are much more of a challenge. Happy to report them or fix them whenever I run across them, especially if we have a target list on the correct variant.

I will look at what we can do about this. It is not a big thing really to replace things in the database with a script, the problem is that it won't get into history, so the correct thing would be to implement an engine that loads the titles, replaces and re-contributes with something that gets into history... Some progress on this today... I have created a list of invalid entries, which for now are obvious ones with spaces and obvious mis-spelling - any contribution to the profiles will alert that the studio should be replaced. Then, I have created a tool to start processing the incorrect entries - I will let this process the obvious entries first, and when having done that, I will create a list of the remaining, so that we can pin-point what should be replaced. Here is a list of studios which are represented more than 10 times (on 10 tiltes or more) in the service. Personal titles and deleted titles (deleted are just marked deleted) is ignored. If you believe a studio name should be replaced, please create a CSV file containing two columns - the first is the studio name from this CSV file, and the second column is the studio name it should be replaced with. Please ensure that you only list the correct legal name as the studio name - lets initially start with those we are sure of. If we do this on some, we can take titles represented less than 10 times. File Attachment(s):
Studios.csv (294kb) downloaded 5 time(s).

How would you like us to assist in reviewing/correcting the Studio lists?
Is there any reason there are separate Studio lists for (Disk) Titles vs Movies? is there any reason why the two lists could not be merged? I know the two categories will not have the same Studio values attached, but we should be able to draw from the same master list in each case, right?

We would need a CSV file with two columns, with the entry from the posted CSV file with the first column being what studio that should be replaced, and what it should be listed as. The reason for the movies vs. disc titles is that movies list production companies - overall it is similar, but not exactly the same. Having trouble installing or upgrading to My Movies 5? FWIW, I’ve gone through all of my own titles and have greatly consolidated the number of Studios.
For example, I’ve created combos for some of the ones that have logo vs legal-name inconsistencies, such as all MGM Studios under “Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM)”, the 20th/Twentieth Century Fox studio names under “Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment LLC (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment LLC)”, etc. with both versions in a single entry.
