I have been a member for many many years and have been cataloging my movies on MyMovies. I always recommend people to this site for their Media cataloging needs.
Back when I started, the huge benefit was to catalog my movies, and then be able to connect to Windows Media Center in Windows 7 so that I can stream the physical media to my projector and play movies..
Times have changed from 10 years ago.. Physical disks are dying out in the USA, everything seems to be going to Streaming services. Windows Media Center no longer works, not sure if there is any streaming capabilities anymore... The mobile devices don't support streaming..
So than a database to store your collection of Disks.. What is the purpose of MyMovies today?
Since WMC is becoming more and more obsolete.. Over the past year, I have switched over to Plex for my streaming purposes...

My Movies was originally built for managing a collection for use with a front-end such as Windows Media Center, and store meta-data for other front-ends. Today, My Movies is for 99% of our users used to manage their movie collection - it can be difficult to understand for users whos priority is their requirement to stream and play, but there are many, many users who simply have a need of managing their collection. The direction My Movies is going in will also more and more be on discovery of what you are interested in, but front-ends for playback is something we have left behind many years ago. I’ve been using My Movies for almost 18 years now. At the beginning, what really hooked me was the technical side: the integration with Windows Media Center (yes, I was one of those people), the ability to scan barcodes, the metadata management... it felt like magic back then.
But over time, something changed. My Movies became much more than a tool — it became the heart of my collection.
These days, I don’t really use it for playback anymore. I use it to build, curate and enjoy my collection — mostly physical: Blu-rays, UHDs, DVDs (and if I could add VHS, I absolutely would). I’d say about 80% of my use is managing my physical titles — keeping track, organizing, and just admiring how it all comes together. The remaining 20% is for logging what I’ve watched or want to watch from streaming platforms, to keep everything in one place.
For me, managing a movie collection is like tending to an English garden — it’s never finished, and that’s the beauty of it. My Movies is, in my experience, the best tool out there for that. And yes, it can perfectly coexist with Plex or any other media server — because they serve different purposes.
I also love discovering hidden gems through the community — seeing what others collect, rate, and recommend. It’s like being part of a private film club with global reach.
Thanks to the developers and the community for keeping this project alive for all these years. I just wanted to share why I’m still here, and why I’ll probably still be here in another 10 years.
Happy collecting,
Capitan Garcius
