I am back to MyMovies after a long time away.
As Windows Media Center is no longer an option, what method, within MyMovies or other application, is recommended for browsing movies, and launching them in VLC? System is Windows 10.
Thanks in advance!

Hi mnoreke, Though I am a bit biased *, I would recommend Chameleon MediaCenter. CMC was written from scratch to be a replacement front-end for WMC+My Movies. It uses the My Movies API to take a direct data feed, and has a visual style very similar to WMC. It supports a lot of external players, including PowerDVD, DVDFab Player, JRiver, MPC, PotPlayer, Win10 Movies & TV, and VLC. CMC works best on Win10, but also works on Win7/8.1. CMC is the only front-end that supports the latest My Movies 5.30+ features, like Movie Collections. You have been gone for a while, as CMC has been out for over 3 years now, is currently on v4.1, and v4.2 is coming out in a few days. Paul * I'm the author, hence the bias.

Thanks for the response. I will check it out, biased or not... :) I use MyMovies with Windows Media center to watch my dvd collection. But it is all run from my iPad, so using the MyMovies App, I am able to scroll through my list of movies, get details, watch trailers, etc. Then when ready hit play movie, and that gets sent over to WMC where it plays on my media server to my projector.... Does Chameleon MediaCenter offer the same capability? Or would I be losing that functionality if I went with that approach?

CMC does not yet have that capability, sorry. Though we do plan to develop a solution in the future. Our plans are bigger than just iPad or Android, as we also want connectivity with Alexa / Google Home type devices, so you can simply speak what you want to watch and have it start playing. Because we haven't started development of these new features yet, we don't have a good idea of how hard this will be to develop, or how long it will take to implement. Just an idea for Binnerup - perhaps Brian would be interested in having the iPad app optionally talk to CMC to handle playback. I'm more than willing to implement an API for the app to link with. I think Paul, if we are to have CMC respond to remote control, the way we can resolve it is for CMC to act as a My Movies remote control API - we will not be able to add specific implementations in the mobile apps for CMC, but we can provide the details of the communication between the mobile apps and WMC, and if CMC can mimic that, it can act as a WMC player. Sounds promising Brian, I hadn't thought of that. Please point me to or send me the details for the My Movies remote control API. Chameleon MediaCenter (CMC) v7.0 - A FREE WMC replacement GUI for My Movies Collection Management on Win7/8.1/10/11, plus a Music Library and App Launcher!

Please start here: https://kb.mymovies.dk/KnowledgebaseArticle50073.aspxYou can see an outline of it here - my suggestion is to open a http port on 51408, and then use one of the mobile apps to connect to it - you will then see their calls. Basically, this documentation is on how to create a client to the WMC remote, but when knowing a client calls, it should be possible to use this to create a server. Thanks Brian. I'm not sure I follow 100%, mainly because this is not what I was expecting. I was expecting that the mobile app would connect to My Movies and send a command there, and that My Movies would forward playback commands to CMC, kind of like a DVD Changer or something like that. If I'm understanding you correctly, you are saying that the mobile app would connect directly to CMC, yes? And by reverse engineering the calls the mobile app makes to My Movies, I can instead create a CMC API that responds exactly as if it was My Movies, right? So the app would think it was connecting to My Movies, but would actually be connecting to CMC? If so, does the Android app support initiating playback? While looking on the Google Play store, I don't see any mention of controlling playback, and I assume this is because it only worked with legacy WMC, so you don't advertise this anymore. Or is this an iOS feature only? Thanks! Adding to my previous post... EDITED: I overcame my last hurdle, so here's where I am now. I installed the Android app, and configured "My Movies for WMC" as a Player. I also set up a web service on port 51408, and an HTML monitor, and I'm customizing the responses. In the Android app, I select a title, click Play, and select the WMC target. In the HTML monitor, I see: http://192.168.1.205:51408/?command=playmymoviestitle&webserviceid=f72eff8f-f021-4b5a-8c18-b3e547ddc825
Where the Web Service ID is exactly what CMC would need to find and start playback.
I fabricated the following response, which sorta works (using brackets since your forum doesn't allow carets):
Code:[Response status="selectoption"][Disc Number="1" Name="(500) Days Of Summer Blu-ray"/][/Response] This caused the Android app to show a prompt for playing that disc (but I thought this would be automatic since there was only 1 disc). I select the disc in the app, and then I fabricated the following response to the playmymoviesdisc, which crashes the Android app :
Code:[Response status="ok"][/Response] Obviously the Android app is looking for a specific response, but since I don't have WMC installed to generate this response, this is impossible for me to deduce.
While the Knowledge Base article detailed the expected response for the PlayMyMoviesTitle, it does not specify any particular response for PlayMyMoviesDisc.
EDIT 2: I'm thinking more and more that this is a bug in the Android app. I submitted a crash report through the app. It always crashes on the PlayMyMoviesDisc Response with status="ok". The iOS app does not crash.

This obviously looks like an error in the Android app regarding - do you by any chance have an iOS device to test with? But, the point is - the API will request the user to select a play option, which the app then responds to. Point taken that it could start this directly when there is just one - I am not sure why it does not do that. Having trouble installing or upgrading to My Movies 5? Yes, I tested on iOS and it does not crash, it automatically displays the remote control which is handy. On Android, I can bring up the remote control manually, and it works fine. And everything else seems to work fine, except for that one consistent crash on successful playback. Ironically, the iOS remote control doesn't work with my app where the Android remote control worked fine, but I haven't done any troubleshooting on that issue yet so this might be an issue on my end. I'll report back once I can do some more troubleshooting on the iOS remote not working. EDIT: I resolved the issue with iOS remote not working, I needed to include the word "pong" in the reply to the "ping", something I didn't have to do on Android. Luckily the fix didn't break Android. So the only issue now is the Android app crash on playback. EDIT 2:binnerup wrote:Point taken that it could start this directly when there is just one - I am not sure why it does not do that. Brian, this is no longer an issue. If there is only a single disc, I have CMC begin playback immediately and send the status="ok" response to confirm, instead of sending the status="selectoption". I mistakenly thought I had to always send the selectoption reply first, as the status="ok" was crashing the Android app. But after testing on iOS, I see that it is okay to go straight to the status="ok" and skip the selectoption if there is only one disc. So you don't need to make any changes to the app to not show a prompt if there's only a single disc, as I fixed that on my end. Just worry about the Android crash. EDIT 3: I just bought the Pro version of the Android app, and it doesn't crash. So it seems the crash is only on the free non-Pro version. pauven wrote:sinfire wrote: I use MyMovies with Windows Media center to watch my dvd collection. CMC does not yet have that capability, sorry. Hey sinfire, I'm happy to provide an update to my earlier answer: The next version of CMC will have this capability!!! I already have it working in my internal beta's. I can select any movie, and if if more than 1 disc I can select the disc, and playback starts in CMC. Even better, if CMC is not currently running when you select a movie, it will be launched automatically and then playback will begin!!!! A big thanks to Brian for his guidance and pointing me in the right direction. I thought this would have been much more complicated. Essentially, you will just point the My Movies mobile app to CMC as a "Remote Control" of type "My Movies for WMC" Player. CMC will responds to your remote as if it was both My Movies (assuming you don't already have My Movies installed on that PC) and as the MM WMC service. So the mobile app thinks it is talking to My Movies on WMC. I've still got some development work to do, but at this point it's all downhill with no real challenges remaining. The next version of CMC is v4.3, and will hopefully be out in March. Brian, Would it be possible to add the ability to play back tv series episodes through the mobile apps? Paul is able to play movies/discs through the apps, but there doesn’t seem to be a mechanism for playing tv series episodes. This would be great if you could add this feature in the near future. I would really like to have this in the mobile app. :-)
