Hello,
I downloaded MyMovies Collection Management version 5.43 a few days ago because it fixed the IMDb import problem. It worked perfectly until yesterday (January 21st) – but since today, the IMDb import has suddenly stopped working.
What could be the cause?
Thanks and regards, Sven

IMDB have made a block of reading, which means that this functionality is not going to return. The site returns empty on requests when reading as an older browser, and if reading on a later, there is now a block against reading programatically. The functionality will this time not be coming back, unfortunately. For physical media, it is recommended to use the "Inherit Cast & Crew" option, so that cast and crew only is maintained once per movie. The DVD Profiler community have a tool "TmdbInfo" which lets you read from TheMovieDB - the output of this tool can be used also with the paste feature in the Collection Management app. We will with a next Pre Release provide an update so that the paste function in the app supports pasting full HTML source code from IMDBs "full credits" page for a title. I’ve installed *a* TmdbInfo tool for Windows, and while says it allows you to copy, that functionality does not seem to be present. Could you link to the tool you are referring to? I want make sure I’m looking at the right thing. I always use “Inherit Cast and Crew” for Titles, but that depends on the pre-existence of a fully populated Movie record. I’m currently stuck until I can copy/paste the information to create those when needed. Any estimate of the timeline for the Prerelease of the new functionality? Thanks.

I did eventually find the "Copy Cast" function (right click), but you may want to advise against using this tool to cut and paste.
It introduces extra spaces between the first and last names, and thus creates redundant entries into the "Cast and Crew" data in the MyMovies database when you paste. For example, pasting the cast for "Die Privatsekretärin" (IMDB-ID tt0022280), you end up with "Renate Müller" (extra space between first and last) in the database as well as the already existing "Renate Müller", etc. etc. etc. for every cast and crew member. In other words, you end up making a massive mess of the database by using this tool, if the paste operation doesn't do any pre-processing of the text strings to remove extraneous spaces. (Any preprocessing really should at least *always* strip off leading and trailing spaces. This is already a problem in the database.)

Could you please address the problem, outlined in my earlier replies, about the paste from TMDBinfo introducing leading space characters and polluting the Cast&Crew database with erroneous names because these leading space characters are not stripped out? Without this being fixed, I will need to avoid including any Cast information at all in any of the new Titles I provide to the service. I am willing to populate Crew data manually, but not Cast. That is just too time-consuming. Can we get some sort of commitment that this will be fixed ASAP? Thanks.

I’ve currently got ten Title records created and ready to go, except they lack any Cast info because of the “untrimmed leading spaces” problem with the workaround paste from TMDBinfo. The rest of the regular MyMovies database maintenance that I do is on hold until there is some sort of working path forward. Any chance of inserting some sort of “data scrubbing” to remove leading space characters in the paste operation ASAP? Could you confirm that getting some sort of viable “cut and paste” of Cast information is an urgent priority, since the current workaround corrupts the data? Thanks!

We are going to take a look at this. There is another workaround available - go to the "full credits" page on IMDB, and "View source" in the browser - copy the content, and paste it on the paste button in the app. Note! Always use the "Inherit Cast & Crew" option so that cast and crew is only to be entered on the main movie profile once. Having trouble installing or upgrading to My Movies 5? Question: I'm on the "Full Credits" page, viewing source (view-source:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084097/fullcredits/), and if I copy the content, nothing happens when I paste it. Are there specific sections of the code I am supposed to copy in order to paste, or the whole thing? (Note: This example I am pasting in the Title record, since it is a feature-length episode of a BBC television episode. So, it might not be the best exemplar.) UPDATE: I've also tried to paste the Cast & Crew (Full Credits) source code into into a Movie record, and it also does not produce any results. (view-source:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076796/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_ov_ql_1) Could you provide a marked-up example of the source code to to be copied from the referenced IMDB-ID here?

I will check why this does not work. Meanwhile, I have instructed our moderation team that it is ok for users to use the report incorrect data function, and request cast and crew to be added to movie profiles. Note! - only movie profiles, not disc title profiles which then should inherit. Having trouble installing or upgrading to My Movies 5? Click here for troubleshooting.Having a problem? Note! - only movie profiles, not disc title profiles which then should inherit. Thank you. That is a very helpful workaround to bridge the gap. Could I get a clarification on one thing though? As my standard practice, I “Inherit Cast & Crew” from the Movie record for all my “Title” records. However, I have a number of collections of feature-length films that were broadcast on BBC as a part of their various weekly series (“The Wednesday Play”, “Play for Today”, “BBC2 Playhouse”, etc.). Each episode is a stand-alone and has a different cast, writer, director, etc. My “Title” records correctly list these as episodes in a “TV Series”, but the “Cast & Crew” cannot be inherited from a subordinate record, since a “Movie” record is not permitted in these cases. In these cases, I include the “Cast & Crew” at the Title level instead. See for example, “Daniel Day-Lewis Triple Feature” (barcode 883929324972). I have another box of BBC dramas I have built (“Ken Loach at the BBC”, barcode 5051561033957) that has ten features that are lacking cast information. I have added “Crew” information by hand, but wish to import the “Cast” information for the films, since in many cases the Cast is extensive. Could you instruct the support team to populate the “Cast” of these at the “Title” level when requested? Thanks.

Installing it now. One oddity during installation you might want to be aware of... It shows up as "My Books" instead of My Movies".

Using V5.44 Pre 1, I was successfully able to paste a copy of the "page source" for "Full Credits" for "The Dancing Hawk" (view-source:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076796/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_ov_ql_1) into both the "Actors" and "Crew" fields in the "Movie" record for IMDB-ID tt0076796. I noticed no problems such as the preceding space characters that were present in the pastes from the TMDBinfo utility.
It looks like the complete Cast was pasted properly, with the same number of Cast records as appeared credited with roles in the IMDB entry, and with the correct diacritical characters in names when present. The only thing unusual I noticed was when I pasted the Cast list, it was displayed in the same order as the displayed Cast list on the IMDB page, but after I saved the Movie record, the order of Cast members got scrambled. To test further, I cleared, pasted and saved the Cast list several times, and each time it was pasted in the correct order, but every time I saved, the order was randomized in a different way.
I'll report on further tests, but it seems to work (mostly) just fine for this first experiment.

Further test: For the case I listed regarding BBC TV dramas, and building a Cast list for those, I have some test results. They are unsuccessful.
For the DVD set "Daniel Day-Lewis Triple Feature" (barcode 883929324972), which consists of three independent feature length dramas which first appeared on three different BBC TV series, I am unable to capture the page-source of the "Full Credits" in a copy operation for the individual dramas in such a way that they can be pasted into the "Title" record. (Note: The TV-Series" Episode structure of the MyMovies implementation does not allow me to inherit the Cast & Crew in a Title record from a referenced populated individual "Episode" in an analogous way to how a "Title" inherits from a "Movie". The current workaround in such cases is to populate the "Cast & Crew" directly in the Title record.)
1) I brought up the IMDB record for the first feature in the set, "How Many Miles to Babylon?" (IMDB-ID tt0084097, BBC2 Playhouse S8.E14 Episode aired Feb 26, 1982). The Title record has "Media Type" set up as "TV Series" and inks the correct series and episode. I had populated the "Crew" by hand, but since the "Cast" list was long, I wished to paste it from another source (as I have done for similiar situations previously, from IMDB).
2) I displayed the "Full Credits" as page-source, and copied it to my paste buffer. (view-source:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084097/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_ov_ql_1)
3) I attempted to paste it into the "Crew" array on the "Title" record with a Media Type of "TV Series". No content appeared to be pasted.
4) I attempted to paste the data into the "Crew" array on a "Movie" record, which I had done successfully in a previous test of pasting Movie "Cast" into a "Movie" record. It also appeared not to produce any visible results. This pointed to the latest MyMovies pre-release treating "Full Credits" page-source data differently if it is from an IMDB TV episode record than an IMDB Movie record. (IOW, what was in my paste buffer from the TV Episode "Full Credits" page-source was not usable to paste in *any* type of MyMovies record "Cast & Crew" array. Further tests were conducted to test my premise.
5) I copied the "Full Credits" page-source from IMDB's record for the Movie "The Dancing Hawk", which I previously demonstrated I could cut and paste successfully. I successfully pasted the data into the "Cast & Crew" array for my BBC Episode "Title" record for "How Many Miles to Babylon?". This demonstrated that a paste would work for a "TV Series" record if there were valid data formatted in the paste buffer. My conclusion: Scraping page-source data from an IMDB "Full Credits" Movie record produces valid data formats in the paste buffer after a copy, and does not produce valid data formats in the paste buffer when scraped from a "TV Episode" record in IMDB for some reason. (Example: view-source:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084097/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_ov_ql_1)
Question: Is there (or will there be) any way to copy/paste "Cast" data for a TV Episode for such cases as BBC feature-length television films broadcast in a "TV Series" context? (Alternately, being able to past such information into a TV episode under a series and being able to inherit the Cast & Crew from an Episode into a Title in the same way one inherits the "Cast & Crew" from a Movie into a Title?) This problem also applies to American "Golden Age of Television" presentations of standalone features up through the 1970s -- Westinghouse, US Steel, Colgate, and other sponsored TV series for example.
I currently have scores of such standalone BBC films in my collection at this point that I still need to catalogue properly. What is the best way to approach this problem going forward?
