This is a long-standing bug, and is still present in the current version V5.44 PR2. (Assuming here that a valid IMDB-ID is already present in the "IMDB:" field on the screen. If an IMDB-ID is not present, the process of adding one is a complete mess, which be addressed in a separate Bug Report. Fixing this more focused issue of correcting the sidebar display status will help immensely toward being able to address the problems in that case.)
If I see in the sidebar that a Title does not have a Movie associated with it, by observing the lack of a "+" next to the title, I right-click on the Title in the sidebar and select "Create Movie".
Once I have done so, I cannot tell whether or not a Movie has been created, because the status of the Title in the sidebar has not changed. There is no "+" next to it that can be clicked to see any created Movie record. Doing an "Update Title" does not change the displayed status. Opening and closing another record does not change the status. Scrolling elsewhere and back so the Title display might be refreshed does not change things. The "+" is not visible, so the status of the "Create Movie" operation is still unknown, and the Movie -- if it was created -- cannot be selected for editing.
I\However, if you then do an "IMDB" import in the Cast or Crew area of the Title screen and then do a "Save", finally the "+" will be indicated next to the Title in the sidebar and you can finally see that a Movie has been created and can access that Movie record.
Proposed solution: When a "Create Movie" operation is complete, the Title display status in the sidebar should be changed at that time. There should be immediate feedback that a Movie record has been created as a result of the "Create Movie" action, and it should be accessible.
