Hi,

After my holiday I opened the program to work on my collection. Ran the movie title update, and suddenly there were over 1500 titles with global data updates. Most of these are from 14-08, and the only differences I see are either the genres not in alphabetical order, or mangled cast members.
I'm currently comparing them all, especially because I don't want to have all these mangled cast and crew names. Been doing this for an hour and I'm up to "C". It is A LOT.

What happened on the 14th?

A few examples:
Cloud Atlas

Hey, marcelb7 -- I'm confirming A LOT of unexpected changes during system-requested Synchronization every time I open the desktop application, when previously changes during Synchronization were minimal. I haven't checked to see what's changed -- it doesn't seem systematic, but erratic -- although I've corrected new typographical errors in Movie Collections, Collection Display Titles, and Collection Sort Titles using Personal Information entries.

Thanks for the info, Brian. A little heads up would have been nice Wink

Regarding one of the changes noted above: "Ron English" is NOT listed as a "Producer" or any other "Cast" or "Crew" role in the Movie "Cold War" (IMDB-ID tt6543652). Why is he listed in the Crew of the film at all, as he was not there previously?

Is this type of thing something we should be keeping an eye out for? Is there someplace particular we should be reporting it whenever these sorts of anomalies crop up in order to help you lock down any errors in your new Name process and changes? Thanks.

(I notice that "Ron English" is a database name that has 14 matching entries in IMDB. I clicked through to edit the "Crew" name for "Ron English" in "Cold War" and see there is now a field in the Name record for an IMDB-ID -- hooray!!!! In this case though, the IMDB-ID field was not populated in the record. Based on the picture in the entry, it should be "nm1577809". Was this "Crew" name added to "Cold War" as a test for propagating these types of ambiguous names? If so, will such test names be removed after the testing is complete? Wouldn't it be safer to create a fake movie to populate with such test names so that the real data doesn't become corrupted, or is this name here in this Movie record the result of a different problem?)

It is one of the on-going things.

Technically - we have historically had persons tracked by their name only - some years ago we changed this to avoid these duplicates - but many profiles are still just referring to the person that was there.

So, you can today add IMDB ids to persons if persons are to be split.

So, should I remove the “Ron English” from “Cold War”? (And other similar anomalies?) Do we know how it got there?

You may do that, yes - some details of what is happening.

We have had some persons which incorrectly duplicated, so that there were multiple persons by the same name, where an IMDB id was not supplied - any such profile was merged, and this is likely what caused it, and it is what caused many titles to update as well.

We have reached out to TheMovieDB, and will be using TheMovieDB to improve profiles where we can - it is a process that will be going on over a longer time, initially with attribution on the apps in the next versions.

You will see it as a user named "externalimport" which contributes as normal to the service, to maintain the history.

Movie profiles will not see many changes, but TV Series will in relation to cast, where we will be switching to following TheMovieDBs structure on applying cast and crew on season level rather than series level.
