We've chatted about this in the past and I thought I'd give it one more shot and then I promise I'll shut up.

I have not had acceptable performance using search since 5.00 build 4. That's still working fine and if I'm stuck there then I'm willing to accept that.

Just installed the latest pre-release to see if perhaps there was any improvement.

The time from entering a single character in the search box to the first result is 58 seconds.

The time after entering a 2nd character in the search box to the next result is 73 seconds.

Even got a message after the second character that My Movies had stopped responding. I don't know if that's a WMC message or a My Movies message.

If I enter more than one character at a time some characters are dropped and the search term is a complete mess.

I understand if my database is just too large at over 8k titles and 6k episodes that the program can't be geared for extremes but then 5.00 continues to work quite well so I thought I'd toss this out here just one more time. This'll be the last, honest!

Great program, nothing else touches it and 5.00 is still heads and shoulders above anything else out there.

Thanks

There was a change in what the app searched for from this build, and it causes a performance difference, especially in relation to your database size.

To be honest, I do not think this is going to change, because changing it will cause a loss in search functionality for everyone - on top of that, it no longer makes sense for us to throw many resources into the Windows Media Center parts, with fewer and fewer users using it.

Thanks for the update and info on forward development, appreciate it.

I don't keep up with new developments other than following the sticky topics on going forward outside of WMC. Does Binnerup have a recommended alternative and/or if someone could point me to a discussion thread discussion alternatives that would be a great help.

I have tried one but it didn't go well at all, cataloged 0 of 101 TV shows with various errors but I'm game to try anything.

Thanks again.

One other thing did occur to me and it's probably an ignorant question. If the bottleneck is SQL Express (I have never used it in any other context) is it a big deal to have a switch that would allow My Movies to use full MS SQL? Again, my apologies is this is as dumb as a rock.

I would recommend Chameleon MediaCenter. I have been using it for over 2 years now and I love it. It was designed for Mymovies as the WMC replacement. There is initial setup that you have to go through because it uses the mymovies metadate. You get 100 title support for free but if you purchase the license you have support for all your titles. Paul the developer and is very responsive. If you have questions/problems with CMC just place a message in the CMC forum and we will help you out.

Thanks, appreciate it. I'm working with it but given the way I've structured my 6k TV episodes most of them won't import (captured from TV, no DVD "parent" and stored in the SnnEnn format as individual episodes). The prospect of reconfiguring 6k TV episodes and a large majority of the 8k of movie titles isn't appealing and I'm not sure I have that much time left on earth ... (hehe).

I also see that there is some mouse support in CMC and more may be available in the future but I'm unsure of how search works; that is is it keyboard only, is there a virtual keyboard or is an actual keyboard required? Can the remote (which I have tried in the past to less than stellar results for the way I work) be used to type in characters?

Haven't found the answer for this either; does it continue to use the MM database? If so are there the same performance issues with CMC that I've having with large datasets?

So far I've not been successful in getting anything imported, end up 0 for 100, so perhaps when I do my questions will be answered.

None of the above is critical of the program, it looks like an excellent bit of work and kudos to the author, just not sure it's a good match for my specific situation.

I've posted some of this over on CMC and my apologies to Brian and associates as I know this isn't the CMC support site, just didn't want to leave you hanging and not thank you for the suggestion.

Since you won't be throwing many resources into the Windows Media Center parts, any chance you'll throw some at improving integration with CMC, since more and more users are using it?

I'm referring to our previous discussions regarding tweaking the My Movies API to both lower the minimum contribution points required to use it, and also so that CMC can implement the same points restrictions on features that you have in the WMC Plugin, to drive revenue your way for the nicer features your API allows.

The issue that bigdriver is referencing is that since he structured his TV Series as TV Series based instead of Disc based, My Movies doesn't export the mymovies.xml metadata for these titles. Since CMC requires the meta-data files, this prevents bigdriver from using CMC without changing how he entered all his titles. The API would probably not have this limitation.
