Hi foks,

I've been running My Movies without issues for many months now. Recently upgraded to ver 2.56 - no problem. Today for some reason, when I run collection manager it gives an error message, stating that it cannot connect to the database on the server. It asks me to retry, give a new server name, or cancel. Since I run in simple client mode, and my database is on my local machine, all I can do is retry - which fails.

In Media Center, when I go to My Movies plug-in, same problem - error message in the lower right corner states that a connection to the database cannot be made. Can't see any movies.

I got worried that I lost my database - navigated to c:\programdata\my movies and verified it was all there.

Tried command line backup of database - fails to output a file (and no error mesage)

System info:
Vista Home (x64) with all updates (could the most recent update be the problem? Happened just a day or so ago)
HP Slimline with AMD quad-core
Norton Internet Security (verified firewall letting program through - nothing had changed)

Log file attached.

File Attachment(s):
log.txt (6kb) downloaded 23 time(s).

Hi, I'm having the same problem. The error that comes up says "My Movies could not connect to the data base on the local server". What actually happened with me is that I tried installing MM3 and it didn't work, so I went back to MM2. It stopped working. I read that Revo Uninstall would uninstall everything and I could then reinstall M2. I did that but not that error comes up. Could some help me with this problem. I am using windows Vista Home Premium. Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Did both of you verify that c/program data/mymovies/filestorage is shared to everyone as "mymoviesfilestorage$"?

Clicking on "properties" for the folder C:\ProgramData\My Movies\FileStorage, I see that it is indeed shared to everyone as a co-owner, with network path \\BEBE-PC\MyMoviesFileStorage$ (BEBE-PC is the name of my computer). I can use this path successfully in the address field of windows explorer and it appears accessible. I don't use any My Movies features over a network - I run in simple client mode (movies and display all on the same system in my living room).

Nothing I know of changed on my end - one day it was working, one day it was not. The only notable event was a slew of windows updates around 9/9/2009 (just a few days ago).
Some other folks are having similar issues, which can be found here:
http://www.mymovies.dk/forum.aspx?g=posts&t=13106
and also http://www.mymovies.dk/forum.aspx?g=posts&t=13207
This last poster said he figured it out but didn't describe how...!

Any help appreciated.

Buzzlight, if you're one just one computer - you should be using the Server install. Have you tried downloading what is called the "Server/Client" and running it? I think some of your issues could be solved by this, at least.
The "Client" software is only for remote pcs connecting to a main server pc..

I'm afraid I'm not very technically advanced, so another user will have to look at your log..

Hi Mattardo,

Ok, so that was problem number one - I had installed the client version of 2.56. I have probably been doing this for awhile....worked great so far! So I uninstalled mymovies, and re-installed the server x64 version. I get the same error, in that it cannot connect to the database (but the error looks different - a different dialog box than before). I verified that the filestorage folder was shared as above, with "everyone" as a co-owner. I can get to the filestorage folder by typing in the share path in windows file explorer - so I know it is accessible.

I tried a few other things - like making sure all the SQL executables were on the exceptions list in the firewall, etc...but, it worked fine before, don't know why this would have changed.

How about erasing the my movies folder in programdata - reinstalling - then start the software with a blank slate...then re-copy back in the original contents of the my movies folder so I can recover my settings and database...

One last issue is UAC - maybe turning that off would fix it? I'll try

Just a quick note, disabled UAC but that didn't work. Of course I've been able to run My Movies with UAC in silent mode for quite awhile, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Hi folks,

Status update: I read in this post (http://www.mymovies.dk/forum.aspx?g=posts&t=12903) that uninstalling SQL Server 2005 in addition to uninstalling My Movies and then reinstalling My Movies might solve the problem. But it didn't work.

Upon running collection manager, I get the same error - it cannot connect to the database, and when I click the option to try again, I get the windows error message stating that My Movies has stopped responding and must be closed.

My log file lists '9/12/2009 10:35:59 PM - Collection.Load - Connection failed with error number '4060'' as the problem.

I just had this happen after tyring to upgrade. i was running 2.52 perfectly fine for many months and decided to "take the plunge'. Now I wish I had left well enough alone. Single machine, server/client install (not client), backed up original database before attempting upgrade.

In order of what I did and what happens.
Unistall MyMovies, Delete the SQL Folder, reboot pc, install 2.56 Open Collection Manager. Error appears, Click "Yes" on the error box and Collection Manager crashes

I uninstalled mymovies again, Removed SQL completely (or I at least think I am) reboot install 2.56 Open Collection Manager. Error appears, Click "Yes" on the error box and Collection Manager crashes

Double checked firewall. No issues there. All required entries are in the exceptions. I also tried turning the firewall off and no change.

This is not a sql per-se error message but rather a mymovies error message. I looked in the troubleshooting wiki and this one is not covered that I could find.

Is there a tool out there that completely removes programs 100% to make sure all references everywhere are gone? Is there a way to force install mymovies?

So I got it back up and running thanks to a post i found....but it is painful and I hope the new myMovie3 overcomes these issues

1) un-install My Movies
2) Stop the Sql Server service
3) Un-install SQL Server
4) Delete program files (NOT MOVIE FILES) for My Movies application
5) Delete program files for SQL Server
6) (CAUTION ONLY PERFORM THIS STEP IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE MAKING CHANGES TO THE REGISTRY - You can seriously screw up our computer if you delete the wrong key.) Delete registry keys related to MyMovies and SQL Server
7) re-install "My Movies Server and Client Edition" for your Windows version
8) If you have a backup (make an additional copy of it) and collection management launches you can restore the database.

Howdy,

I followed the steps above and no luck - I get the same exact error as before. It seems I can't get collection manager to run at all.

Are there any other good movie management programs out there?

;-)

Feel you pain. It took me 2 days to sort it out. Basically from what I gather you have to be able to track down and delete every shred of install for mymovies and sql or it will not work. After uninsalling MyMovies, stopping the sql services, uninstalling sql, deleting the mymovies folder, deleting the sql folder, i had to track down all references to sql or mymovies in the regedit program. Once that was done, I rebooted and double checked that there were zero references anywhere to mymovies or sql. Then I reinstalled 2.56 and it worked.

Perhaps binnerup can clarify why sometimes upgrading is not a fully painless automated thing and I have high hopes that for v3 this will be eliminated.

Yes,

I did exactly that - used the search in regedit to find all possible instances. I did a re-boot. I suppose it's possible I missed some...

HOWEVER, I managed to find another solution. Based on some other threads, I downloaded and installed MS SQL Server Studio Express, and learned how to detach and attach DBs manually. It was there that I found out that my my movies database file (my movies.mdl) was likely corrupted. Unfortunately, I had deleted it when I erased the SQL server directories when attempting a clean install...BUT, I'm a good boy and do regular backups. My last backup version of this file failed to attach...its backup date was after the problem surfaced. However I had an earlier backup on 8/31 - I tried restoring that one, and it WORKED! So I believe somehow that the database file in SQL Server 2005 became corrupted. I've probably lost about 2 or 3 titles I added between 8/31 and now...but that's better than 100s!

Hoping like you that Ver 3 fixes a lot of these headches...

Update on the last update...

My Movies also managed to recover titles I had added since my database as of 8/31 after I turned folder watching on...so zero loss. Great!

One tip: If you're running Vista, movies will not play back in media center if your movies are on an external drive AND you have UAC turned off...it comes up with a region error. I found this on another thread...since I had deactivated UAC during the troubleshooting process, after I fixed my database problem, NONE of my movies would play in MCE. After re-activating UAC, all worked fine...

Needless to say, online movie collections are still an early adoptor activity.

Actually this can't be totally true. All my movies are stored in NAS and have zero issue with playback. I have UAC turned OFF on all Vista Players because I have found if left on it causes all kinds of problems. If you are talking about "external" as in the DVDRom drive you may have a playback issue if running componenet video and not HDMI.

A clean install of myMovies works very well. Have actually never had an issues with a clean install and no changes. It's the monkying around trying to "upgrade" versions that is the weak link.

Hi kulinc

Turns out the problem only applies to _some_ drives connected through USB - whereas network paths (and thus NAS drives) seem immune to it. I verified this myself while trying to troubleshoot the problem. In fact a workaround was to share the movie folders on the USB-connected drives over the network - and use the network path for movie locations instead of the drive letter. I could have done this, but opted to go back to running UAC in silent mode (i.e., TweakUAC) and now all is well. There were about 3 or 4 threads on this on other websites.

In terms of installs - I agree. In my case, I think I just got unlucky and my database file (in SQL) became corrupted somehow, and was probably unrelated to an install/upgrade. I backup my database more often now...

I've tried all these steps several times usually resulting in blue screen of death crash. I then have to restart safe mode & do a restore from before installation. I suspect I may have deleted something in regedit I shouldn't have. I also went as far as deleting database, program data files, and anything I could find anywhere that had anything MM or SQL. I'm not afraid to, only about 100 movies. Does anyone have a list of the registry files that need deleting? Short of reformatting, is there a sure way of getting up & running? I do have a backup I believe. Is the backup .mmb? Any idea why this started happening in the first place?

It is a disaster.. I am having the same problem running a WHS mediaserver and a client version of MM. If MM wants a future, it needs tools that can repair or simply just regenerate the DB. Right now I am looking at un-installing MM

Wow, that's a pretty extreme reaction considering you've never even asked for help. Two out of three of your posts have been threatening to dump My Movies, and none of them are describing the problem you're having beyond "I am having the same problem".

I had no issues whatsoever rolling back from MMv3 to v2.56 on a WHS-based install. All I had to do was click the clear database button on the server and turn on folder monitoring so it would re-detect my collection via the MyMovies.xml files in the folders. Worked perfectly after that.

On a WHS build, the absolute worst case is an uninstall and manual deletion of the DB files on the C:\ drive, which has been listed a a solution tons of times. WHS wasn't susceptible to the issues that standalone users had rolling back to 2.56 (which is now rectified in 2.57PR by doing EXACTLY what your post asks for).

I'm just going to go all out and be mean to some people here: there are tens of thousands of active users of My Movies v2 out there. If these issues were as disastrous as some of you make them out to be, that wouldn't be the case. In then end, you really have to consider whether you are doing something wrong or your computer has something wrong rather than simply blaming the software. Sometimes you really just need to bite the bullet, back up your data, re-install the OS, and make sure you have a good clean install. If that doesn't do it, you need to take a look at your hardware.

My Systems:
Windows Home Server - Athlon II x4 620, DFI BI 785-M35 Mainboard, 4GB DDR3-1600, 5.5TB SATA storage, BD/HD-DVD ROM Drive
Windows 7 Media Center - Phenom II x3 720BE @ x4 3.2GHz, DFI 790GX-M3H5 Mianboard, 4GB DDR3-1600, 320GB SATA storage, Radeon 5770, BD-ROM drive

Having issues? Did you read this and provide the requested information in your post?

This will be my first post in the forum. I am having the same problem listed in this thread and MANY others. I LOVE MMCv2 and have had it up and running for a few months now. Out of the blue, about 5 days ago, MMC posted the server error.

I have searched the forum, read EVERY work in wiki, and even watched Nick's videos to no avail.

I agree with illrigger, but i don't believe his was a justified response. There are hater's everywhere. If they move on and live in ignorance, that only improves the quality of life for those of us who enjoy a challenge and take it head on!

That being said....

Vista 64 Eternity BE
WD Caviar BE 1TB 32MB Cache partitioned into 4x250 GBs(only 2 are dedicated to movie library)
WD Caviar 120GB 16MB Cache

I use WinASO Registry Optimizer, RegDefrag, DiscCleaner, and WinTweaker for system maintenance.

I uninstalled MMC and SQL Server 2005 through RegOpt, then ran the included RegCleaner to wipe out all references
I then defragged my registry and rebooted
Upon reboot, I installed Server/Client...
BEFORE starting MMC, I adjusted the WinFirewall to reflect suggested settings
I then started MMC and it gave the exact same error...

I have spent 3 days researching this fix to no avail...

If anyone has a legitimate fix to this, or even a link to a known fix, please help so I can get busy contributing to this AWESOME system that is My Movies!

Thanks,
Allen
