I've discovered that Win7 has no support for MKV files. I love MyMovies and its my primary reason to for sticking with WMC rather than XMBC.
How has everyone gotten MKV files to work? Are they the best format?
All I want is to be able to easily rip my movies, play them (with chapter skipping), have digital audio, etc. Basically, the nice features of MKV.
I'm all ears for another suggestion if there is one.

I have not been able to get mkv files to play properly (though I haven't spent much time trying). HOWEVER I am able to play .m2ts files which will support the hi-def 1080p and Dolby5.1 formats just as well. I use mkv2vob or tsMuxer, both are nice small programs that will quickly (literally less than 3 mins for about a 4 gig file on my system) convert mkv files to .m2ts while maintaining both video and audio quality. I prefer using tsmuxer because it will maintain all audio streams within a file, however if you need to convert an mkv file to a format that can easily be played on a ps3 then mkv2vob would be your best bet, its a bit limited in its features but will output files that are more compatable with a ps3. mkv2vob Download: http://www.3r1c.eu/mkv2vob/mkv2vob.exetsMuxer Download: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/video_editing/smartlabs_tsmuxer_win.cfm Nice tutorial for tsmuxer: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_mkv_content_on_playstation_3_ps3.cfmDecent tutorial for mkv2vob: http://blog.hillbillyhardware.net/?page_id=70NOTE: When using mkv2vob remember to check "Always Transcode DTS" under the options tab unless you have a DTS sound system, I usually transcode the DTS regardless because if I dont even my DTS system sometimes plays the sound as static. Hope this helps!

How easy it is to get mkv's to play in WMC depends on whether or not you are using 32 or 64 bit Windows. If you are using 32bit, its really easy. I recommend installing the Combined Community Codec Pack found at: http://www.cccp-project.net/If you are using 64bit it can be tricky. I recommend using the Shark007 codec pack found at: http://shark007.net/index.html - grab the Win7 pack, install it, then grab the x64 components and install that.
