I was running 3.14 as a database server and running through Windows Media Center. In Media Center it asked me to upgrade to 3.15 so I said OK. It then appeared to uninstall the application and failed on installation of the new version. I have tried to install it from the downloaded package and that is failing as well. Even after a registry clean out, I am getting Error Code 2908 Updating Component Registration.
The database is still good as my remote clients can connect and run My Movies as well as through Windows Media Center.
Any ideas because I am frustrated as my family loves this application and I want it back on my primary media server.
OS - Windows 7 x64

Are you running the installation as an administrator, and does it prompt for administrative rights when doing so? This issue is with registrering an assembly in the assembly cache - it is however something specific to your machine. Try a reboot if a prior version of the assembly is blocked of some reason. I've been running it as Administrator, tried rebooting numerous times, and even tried to run it in compatibility mode. Its definitely unique to the machine but it was caused by the installation request that was prompted in the Media Center GUI. I've upgraded via download package in the past with success.

if this win 7 or vista, even though it should not matter, put the setup in place, and right click and do "run as administrator". you would be surprised, should not apply and probably not a factor here, but try it.

Exact same problem. Running as administrator does not help.

Definitely tried multiple times as administrator and no go. I ended up doing a Windows 7 restore and went back to the point before the upgrade. I was then able to reinstall the application and its working now. But the installation of 3.15 via the Windows Media Center Console was the event that damaged the OS and prevented installation. I couldnt install an upgrade to Logitech camera after this event which is why I decided to roll back and repair Windows 7.

Just glad I got it working since we rely on this software daily to feed the house. Next upgrade I will approach with caution taking a restore point just before. Its ok as it gets me off my duff to create an image backup which I get lazy at. Thanks for your help.

So you have another data point, the exact same thing happened to me.
Win 7 x64 machine, prompted for update in Media Center, update failed out. Manual installs result in the same error codes and conditions in this thread. I get the same error even when trying to install older versions on the same box. I've been playing with this off and on for a while now so a system restore isn't a great option for me. I welcome any suggstions, but will continue to mess with it and will post any findings I come up with.

If you are running AV software, turn it off for the period of the install. AV software can have strange effects on installs.
I was installing a Quicktime update yesterday and the update failed. I switched off the AV software and it installed.

Thank you for looking into it, I appreciate the effort.
I believe I have found the solution. At least I have solved it for myself. Hopefully someone else with the issue can corroborate the fix.
In my searches, I also found a lot of things pointing at .net framework issues causing this issue. Upon further investigation into my system, I noticed that Windows Update had applied a .NET update shortly before I had issues with the My Movies installer. The update in question was a .NET 4 Client Profile. I attempted to repair it, then reinstall....no luck, 2908 error again. I then threw caution to the wind and went ahead and uninstalled the .NET 4 client profile altogether. Rebooted the system, reinstalled My Movies 3.15 and SUCCESS! I immediately went into Media Center, clicked My Movies and was notified that there was an update to 3.16 available. Thinking to myself "Uh-oh, here we go again" and went ahead and upgraded. Successful install, and 3.16 is now working.
Thanks for this program, hopefully this can help someone else out of this same predicament, and perhaps point you a bit closer to a workaround (if there even is such a thing on your side of the equation.)

This worked fine for me also. Removed the .NET 4 stuff (had to remove both Extender and Client parts), didn't bother to reboot, and MyMovies 3.17 installed perfectly. So perhaps there should be a check for .NET 4 stuff when the installer is started? Not everyone is fond of .NET, check out the Javazone in Oslo trailers: http://jz10.java.no/
