Can anyone tell me how to manually create a file that will work with Play Directly? It appears that only files created with the Convert feature work with Play Directly. I am asking this because I know the converter cannot handle foreign language subtitled bluray titles directly, so I'm trying to come up with a method that will work to produce a file that MM will play using the Play Directly feature. I'm stuck. I have MKV rips with burned in subtitles which I have tried converting with handbrake using profiles that mimic the MM XML profiles. No joy. I have tried using MCEBuddy as well. No joy. Here's what I don't understand. The files that are produced with these methods (either MP4 or M4V) will play just fine on every PC, iPad, and iPhone if I open the file directly using a file manager. If I attempt to play the file using MM Play Directly, it will open the file and present a black screen with no run time. It doesn't matter how long I wait, the film never plays. What am I doing wrong? File Attachment(s):
log-play-directly-fails-to-play.txt (15kb) downloaded 19 time(s).

You need to consider what is trying to play the file in what circumstances, if starting playback from within your Media Center My Movies libraries it will be Media Center trying to playback but when clicking from explorer it is likely media player or whatever player is configured on your device. Microsoft actually don't list mp4 as a supported file type for Windows Media Center see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb189661.aspx at all and with media player only if you install additional codecs see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/316992/file-types-supported-by-windows-media-player Quote: The MPEG-4 file format, as defined by the MPEG-4 specification, contains MPEG-4 encoded video and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)-encoded audio content. It typically uses the .mp4 extension. Windows Media Player does not support the playback of the .mp4 file format. You can play back .mp4 media files in Windows Media Player when you install DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs. DirectShow-compatible MPEG-4 decoder packs include the Ligos LSX-MPEG Player and the EnvivioTV. If I understand that it means only mp4 containing mpeg-4 encoded video specifically. It will not handle h.264, h.265 encodes. Though you may be able to add support to Media Center/Player via means of additional codec packs etc. or you can install an additional player configured as an external player setup to play the specific file type.

I think you may misunderstand my issue. There is some content that the MM built-in converter cannot handle (foreign language bluray with subtitle burn in). These need to be done manually. When they are done manually and added to the MM database as mobile files, they will not play on the mobile device (iPad, iPhone, etc.) when selected using the "Play Directly" feature in the mobile MM app; however, that same file will play correctly when it is played outside of the MM app when accessing the file directly from a file manager. This has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with something in MM or the MM app. I originally thought that the problem was with the files and how the conversion was being done, but when I found that the file play correctly on the iPad and iPhone using a file explorer, but not with the MM Play Directly UI, it became clear that the issue was with what MM was doing either on the backend or in the MM iOS app. Do you have any other ideas on how we can get to the bottom of this?

Am I the only user having this problem?
If you have been able to us Play Directly on an iPad or iPhone to play manually created files (not using the converter) how did you get it to work?

Bump. Can one of the admins provide a response that actually answers the question that's been asked? I really would like to get this working....
What is the trick to manually creating an M4V or MP4 file that will play when you click "Play Directly" from within the My Movies app on iPad or iPhone?
This has to be a MyMovies bug since files I have created manually will play on these devices when started via a file manager. They only fail to play when using MM "Play Directly".

Which platfom are you using, and which app version? Based on the log, it request info about which files that are available for playback, but there is not a request coming in for the actual file - the app should when receiving just one file directly query it. Otherwise, the log was taken before the process was finished. Can you try to post an updated log - so that we can see that it is not because it is grabbed before we can see the actual call?
